CONTEMPORARY GLASS EXHIBIT OPENS MARCH 31 AT RVF ART MUSEUM

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - When mythology morphed into maritime lore – and the siren’s call was personified as a seductive half woman, half fish – men were enticed to dive beneath the frothing surface of the seas and wonder at the peace and beauty of that world below.

Even now, such treasures await those who respond to her call and immerse themselves in the liquid artistry of Katherine Gray’s contemporary glass exhibit, “Here Comes That Sinking Feeling.” It opens Saturday, March 31, at the Cal State San Bernardino Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum.

Gray’s mastery of her medium has made her a person of interest and authority in the art world. Her work has been exhibited across North America and has been the subject of many articles and reviews.

“Katherine Gray’s recent work made me think of that … sense of glass as historical material, as part of sumptuous display, as scintillating and visually groovy, as sparkling and glossy and honey on the eyes,” said Glass magazine editor James Yood. “This work makes my heart race.”

The Corning Museum of Glass in New York, the Museum of American Glass in New Jersey and the Tacoma Museum of Glass Art in Washington hold collections of her work.

A glass lecturer at Cal State San Bernardino, Gray has also taught workshops in the United States, Canada, France, Australia and Japan, and is a periodic contributor to Glass magazine and Glass Gazette.

Gray received her master’s degree in fine arts from Rhode Island School of Design. She is also an alumnus of Ontario College of Art in Toronto and has received many scholarships and residencies. She is a recipient of the Bellevue Art Museum Award of Merit and the Ontario Crafts Council Indusmin Award.

“Here Comes That Sinking Feeling” will be on exhibit from March 31-May 19. “Ongoing Invention,” a concurrent exhibit, will feature crystalline and colorful pieces of other contemporary glass artists, including Marquis, Dreisbach, Stinsmeuhlen-Amend and Prince.

The university’s Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum will host a reception for both exhibits from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, March 31.
